Americans are obsese.
But at least they are attempting to fight the battle of the waistline. They spend $35 billion a year on weight loss programs.
More than two-thirds of American adults probably should be on weight-loss programs because that’s how many Americans are overweight or obese, according to the National Institute of Health.
And a lot of these diets are fads with questionable health benefits. Often people who go on these fad diets end up with the yo-yo effect. The weight goes down, but comes back with a vengeance. For the 20 pounds they lost on the fad diet, they may gain 30 pounds back.
According to a CBS news segment, one report shows 64 percent of Americans think the “government requires warnings about side effects on weight-loss products. It doesn’t. And most – 54 percent – think the products are approved for safety by the FDA. They’re not.
Reader’s Digest just came out with four dangers of a fad diet:
- You’ll wind up feeling dehydrated
- You’ll get tired quickly
- You can get serious digestive problems
- You’ll suffer from malnutrition
Fad diets – or whatever is popular this week – usually do cause you to lose weight quickly. If they didn’t people wouldn’t gravitate to them, and they would be fads.
“Some, but not all fad diets, promote unhealthy eating habits and don’t meet nutritional recommendations. They may provide far fewer daily calories than normal (“crash” diets)—resulting in weight loss mainly comprised of water and lean muscle mass, rather than fat.
Here is a list of the most famous fad diets, according to a Huffington Post article, that you should not consider:
- The Raw Food Diet
- Alkaline Diets
- Blood Type Diet
- Werewolf or Lunar Diet
- Cookie Diets
- Five-Bite Diet
- Master Cleanse/Lemonade Diet
- Baby Food Diet
- Cabbage Soup Diet
- Grapefruit Diet
- Sleeping Beauty Diet
- HCG Diet
- Tapeworm Direct
- Cotton Ball Diet
I’m glad I haven’t heard of some these diets. Having been heavy all my life, I’ve tried a lot of different diets. I’ve gone to fat farms. Anyone can lose weight when chefs make all your meals. I’ve lost weight by drinking a lot of water before meals. I’ve done various shake diets.
I’ve lost weight on all of them, but eventually I gained the weight back and then same. At my fattest, I weighed 280 pounds. Perhaps that’s not bad for a 6’6” male, but I’m 5’6” cheating.
I understand people going on diets to lose a quick 20 – 40 pounds. Thin people don’t understand. Thin people don’t understand what it is like to have three wardrobes in your closet in three different sizes: Large, Extra-Large, XX-Large and, for some, XXX-Large.
I’ve often wondered why I eat, why it is hard to say no to cookies or chocolate cake. Fat people understand the games we play. I usually don’t buy bags of cookies from the supermarket to take home. I would go to gas station at night and buy a 6-pack of Oreos.
Hey, I was limiting my intake. I wasn’t eating entire bag, but I was having at least six cookies a day, sometime more if I went into the gas stations more than once.
I knew a man who weighed about 350 pounds. He would nervously look at the chair he would sit in for job interviews, hoping that it would not break when he sat in it. I never had to worry about that, but, at times, I could not close the seat belt on the airplane. I would have to request the extension belt.
People with weight problems can’t say no. When you are over 300 pounds, even 400 pounds, it is hard, if not impossible, to maintain the momentum when you are losing a pound a week.
Losing a quick 20-40 pounds gives you momentum and confidence to lose more. It gives us confidence to lose even more. We begin to feel good about ourselves.
Weight-loss programs are not going away.
I haven’t met one weight-loss program when you don’t lose weight. If that happened, no one would go on them.
But the key is to find a weight-loss program that balances all aspects of your health because many of us have obesity-related illnesses. We are all looking for the weight-loss program that is easy to maintain, provides quick results and watches out for our health.
I will keep dieting. I will trying to eat health. Tonight, I had a hamburger without a bun, mayo and fries.
Tonight, let’s put it in the win column.
